Taste safe ‘sawdust’ sensory bin

My theme this month is tool box so I thought it would be fun to do a sawdust sensory bin. I didn’t want to use real sawdust as I knew it would be tasted by toddlers, and I was also concerned about splinters.  I don’t know enough about sawdust to know weather or not you can get splinters from it but I didn’t want to take the chance.

Originally, I though I would try whole wheat flour but flour is so soft. I wanted my sawdust to have a grainy feeling. I remembered I had some coconut flour that I baked with once but hated the texture of the bread I made with it.

From their I rummaged around my baking supplies and found a few more ingredients that I knew will help me achieve the look and texture I wanted.

  1. Coconut flour
  2. Cocoa powder
  3. Shredded dry unsweetened coconut
  4. Stale wheat Chex cereal

I started with mixing the bag of coconut flour and cocoa powder ( one spoonful at a time) in a ziplock bag till I got a color I liked. Then I added the shredded coconut for a different texture. Lastly, I saw a box of stale cereal on the counter that I was about to toss and crunched it up to see what it would like. I loved it and added to the mix. I ended up adding one more spoon of cocoa powder to get the mixture back to a color I liked.

It may smell nice but according to the look on my almost 2 year old charges face when she licked it, it doesn’t taste good.

I had some small tools that I also added to the bin. Some of the tools in the set I bought where smaller than I realized when I ordered them so I didn’t use those ones as they were a choking hazard.
